Calls for transparency, public input, and protection of northern New Mexico’s water and heritage

Española, NM — Debbie Rodella, candidate for State Representative in House District 41, raised concerns following reports of a proposal for exploratory uranium drilling in the Carson National Forest, specifically in the Chama Basin.

“Many residents in our communities are just now learning about this proposal, and that alone is concerning,” Rodella said. “People deserve to know what’s being considered in their own backyard before decisions are made.”

Rodella emphasized the critical importance of protecting northern New Mexico’s natural resources and cultural heritage, noting that water remains central to the region’s way of life.

“Water is the lifeblood of northern New Mexico,” she said. “Our acequias, our land, and our traditions have been protected and honored for generations. Any project that could put those at risk must be approached with extreme caution and full transparency.”

Rodella also pointed to what appears to be a lack of adequate public notification and community engagement surrounding the proposal.

“Communities like Canjilon deserve to be fully informed and involved in any process that could impact their future,” she said. “Transparency and public participation are not optional—they are fundamental responsibilities.”

Rodella is calling for a comprehensive environmental review and meaningful opportunities for public input before any exploration activity moves forward.

“Our communities have the right to protect their water, their land, and their heritage,” Rodella added. “Their voices must be heard and respected every step of the way.”
